Games For Windows Live is "now offering completely free online multiplayer" service, Microsoft said in a statement posted on the service's Web site. The company previously charged a monthly fee of $7.99. However, the emergence of several free online gaming services may have prompted Microsoft to drop the monthly charge.

Crazy things happen all the time in video games. People get shot, die, then come back to life. Plumbers traverse magical pipes and fight grumpy mushrooms. Monkeys voluntarily enter giant plastic balls and roll around collecting bananas...

Video games sold in New York state must clearly label ratings for violent content under a law signed on Tuesday, which rights groups criticized as likely unconstitutional.

If you spend a lot of time reading game reviews, you might have started to notice that they all read, well... kind of same-y. And it doesn't help matters that there's a whole unwritten vocabulary of clichés that's spread across the entire industry, including the press and the companies themselves. Here are a few you may have noticed.

It's a normal process--video game characters are constantly changing. From Mario to Marcus Fenix, characters always undergo visual facelifts in order to "update" the series' look. But good taste is not always used when these changes are made. Read on as we identify the eight most terrible game character makeovers.

We compiled game review scores (collected from Metacritic) by genre to show you which console does each kind of game best, in the most unbiased way we can. We've split the results into two kinds for each console. The first is the average score for all games in each genre. The second is just the top 5 best-scoring games in each category.

Paramount is getting "Clueless," hanging with the "Mean Girls" and looking "Pretty in Pink" for its first slate of videogames. The studio is co-publishing casual games based on those three pics from its library for release later this year. It's splitting production costs with partner Legacy Interactive.

There are a handful of key titles that we thought we could expect for this year's holiday season, so why weren't they showing alongside their seasonal bretheren? We rounded up for you a complete list of this year's no-shows and the hype that preceded them, and then tried to get to the bottom of their conspicuous absence.

Why do we have three different, completely incompatible video game consoles on the market right now, instead of multiple companies making video game consoles that play a single format? We have unified formats for CDs, DVDs and bananas, so why not video games? As is generally the nature with rhetorical questions, I've got some answers

E3 was a disappointment. But you knew that already. Yet do you know why it was a disappointment? Sure, there are the easy answers. Few new game announcements. Anything Nintendo said or did. But they?re just that. Easy answers. There were a lot more things wrong with the show than just those limelight-grabbers. Things that we never want to see at E3

E3 is over and the stage is set for a slew of high-stakes showdowns and rematches: Guitar Hero World Tour vs. Rock Band 2, Gears of War 2 vs. Resistance 2, Sony vs. Microsoft, and the Wii... well, no one can mess with the Wii. But you can probably tear this list and its oddball choices to shreds.

?Find love?. That?s it. I have to find love in a videogame. This actually makes sense. Not many girls play videogames, which makes them an incredibly efficient social filter: you instantly cut out the majority of girls who have little interest in games and would only get sick of you talking about them all the time.

Dreaming up an entirely new personality with entirely new traits is a daunting task, so the majority of folks you meet in games end up feeling identical to the folks you met in previous games. If they don't look alike, they act alike. If they don't act alike, they at least talk alike. The only things that change are the name and the background.

Activision today scored a major player for Team Guitar Hero (take that Rock Band!), landing Jimi Hendrix, who will make his posthumous "video game debut" in Guitar Hero World Tour. Hendrix will feature as a playable character in the game, and two master tracks from the fire-casting rock star will ship on the game disc

MAG was shown to a focus group less than a month before E3. One among that group reached out to me, under a promise of anonymity, to describe what was shown and asked of the group. Put simply, MAG will be a mercenary combat MMO. It will more than likely carry SOCOM branding, as Zipper Interactive is behind it.

Video Games are an influential aspect of pop-culture and entertainment whose impact goes beyond the digital arts to influence perspectives in art, cinematography, and even fashion. Behind every game character and dynamic environment are artists whose talents birthed the image seen in the 3-D world.

The criteria for a good sequel is almost contradictory; it's a dangerous mix of old and new, with just enough old to serve as a sturdy foundation and just enough new to prevent boredom and apathy. But when not perfectly balanced, a sequel can prove disastrous...

It was somewhere between ordering my army of blue-blooded Max Rebo soldiers to crush an enemy civilization, and conquering the galaxy from the comfort of a spaceship that resembled a four post bed, when I realized they had pulled it off. Spore is great.

To me the fifty smackolas a year has been a rip-off for features as inexpensive and basic as what Microsoft has offered. There was no service that Microsoft provided that required $50 from the average consumer in my mind, and they only have charged us because they had enough lackeys (myself included) willing to pay. That was until Monday.

The much anticipated Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour, plus newcomer Rock Revolution, were unveiled at E3. This is a battle for realistic instruments and online audiences, without alienating non-musicians. And while all three turn you into a rock star, we found the gameplay experiences to be very different. [SEPARATE VIDS FOR EACH!]
